SDEV Welcomes New Team Intern, Sarah Chung

On June 1st, SDEV welcomed Sarah Chung. Sarah is our summer intern through the Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program (DCERP) at University of Michigan. DCERP is a social justice focused summer fellowship program run through the U-M's Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. While working alongside Detroit-based organizations throughout the summer tackling social and environmental justice, fellows are engaged in immersive development of the city and community engagement. Sarah will be working with residents to identify and learn more about indoor air pollution hotspots at the neighborhood scale and will analyze the impact of SDEV’s Clean Diesel Initiative on cutting diesel pollution in and around Southwest Detroit. Sarah will also support communications activities at SDEV, including a website re-design and social media communications.

Sarah is in the Biopsychology, Cognition and Neuroscience program at the U-M and intends on working in Community Health or Social Work following her college career. Despite being born and raised in New Jersey, Sarah often feels like a New Yorker, frequenting the city for excursions. Sarah has a passion for urban city social justice and youth development. Through volunteering with other nonprofit organizations in the Detroit area during her time at the U-M, she has grown a heart for the city as well as a determination to learn more about it. We are working hard to create a virtually immersive environment by inviting Sarah to dozens of community meetings as an adaptation to these current times. We know that Sarah will come to love Southwest Detroit because of its closeness, supportive environment, and resiliency.
